I thought this book would not be very entertaining when I first started reading it but after six or seven pages I could not put it down without an extremely good reason, i.e., rest, nourishment, etc. Monsoon provided, for me, an adventure covering history, culture, and family ties. I had a wonderful time reading it.

In the steps of James A Michener, Wilbur Smith year again proves himself a master of historical fiction. He must have written a bad book, but after two dozen reads after as many years, I’ve not found it! I hope he will continue to entertain with new compositions!
For anyone at all interested in Africa historical fiction, Wilbur Smith's Courtney series is a must. This novel is the second in the lengthy series. (Birds of Prey being the first). This, as was the Birds of Prey is a seagoing story that establishes the first connection of the Courtneys to the continent of Africa and are the basis for many of the following novels. They are high seas adventurers that can be enjoyed by lovers of the sea as well as lovers of Africa. Be cautioned that there is plenty of graphic violence and sexual situations. Not for the faint of heart.
Monsoon was another Wilbur Smith exciting historical fiction, but when reading, one feels in the midst of history, and it's real. I'm so indebted to this wonderful author! Love the Courtney series the best.

In my opinion, this book is one of the best of the best. Wilbur Smith"s books in general are some of the best reading out there, and this book is one of his best efforts. It is full of adventure and twists of fate. It is well worth reading and rereading after a time. I just finished reading it for the second time and was still surprised by certain developments in the book.

From beginning to end Wilbur Smith engages the reader in another sweeping saga of the Courtney's. The hardship and danger posed by the father's decision to allow two of his young sons to accompany his expedition to the dark continent and their growth and development from boyhood to manhood make for a detailed and engaging plot with all the twists and turns one would expect from a Smith novel. The plot will satisfy every reader from young adult on up and I heartily recommend this artfully crafted tale for one and all.
